Artistic Proposal for Fredriksdalshallen, Helsingborg

Arrival – An Interactive Myth at Fredriksdalshallen
Arrival (Ankomst) is a grand, tactile public art installation created for Fredriksdalshallen in Helsingborg. By blending modern sci-fi with local history, the work serves as both a landmark and a welcoming meeting point for residents and visitors alike.

Vision & Concept
The artwork is built upon a newly constructed myth: the iconic Fredriksdal water tower is actually a mothership for mechanical extraterrestrials. Arrival captures the exact moment a family of space travelers has "skidded down" in their craft, parking haphazardly outside the sports hall to make it to their practice on time.

By grounding the supernatural in a relatable human situation—the everyday stress of reaching a destination—the piece creates an immediate connection and sense of empathy between the observer and these strange figures.

Design & Materials
The installation consists of two primary elements:

The Ship: A transparent, biomechanical structure made of dark-rusted steel and gleaming brass finishes. It functions as an open "forest room" featuring larch wood seating, interactive controls, and periscopes.

The Creatures: Five unique individuals, partly constructed from salvaged machine parts sourced from local scrap dealers and farmers. They are strategically positioned from the entrance up to the roofline, weaving the artwork into the hall's architecture.

Sustainability & Function
Arrival is designed to be lived in. With integrated lighting design that enhances safety during dark hours and a construction entirely free of sharp edges, the work invites play, rest, and interaction.

The material palette—steel, stone, and wood—is chosen to age with dignity while withstanding harsh outdoor environments. As part of the project’s sustainability profile, biological elements are integrated; climbing vines are encouraged to take root in the ship's frame, promoting biodiversity and blurring the line between technology and nature.

"An identity-shaping part of the environment where the technological meets the organic, and where the epic event of 'first contact' becomes a part of everyday life."
