Digital hydra

Digital Hydra (2021)

Permanent public sculpture,

A sculptural exploration of childhood in the digital age

Digital Hydra is a large, interactive sculpture that invites both children and adults into a world of imagination and reflection. Inspired by the mythological hydra—a many-headed creature—it mirrors the complexity of today’s digital landscape: full of wonder, connection, and risk.

The sculpture features seven unique “heads,” each resembling a screen and representing a different digital reality: an internet troll, a nest of serpents, a thoughtful deer, a kitten, a heart emoji, a mechanical peephole, and a mirrored surface for self-reflection.

Built from welded black and stainless steel, Digital Hydra is durable, climbable, and made largely from recycled machine parts. Despite its industrial aesthetic, it invites play and engagement rather than fear.

As part of its process, the sculpture also hosted workshops where children explored their digital experiences and contributed their own creative “screens,” encouraging ownership and dialogue.

Digital Hydra is a playful, thought-provoking creature of the screen age—offering space for interaction, imagination, and conversation.
