"Bridges"

Proposal for an artistic landmark in Oskarshamn | 2015

Bridges is intended as a symbolic representation of how power generation in Oskarshamn has fostered growth and paved the way for new encounters over many years.

Execution

The construction of "Bridges" (Broar) centers on several pillars, interconnected through steps and landings. Drawing inspiration from Gustave Eiffel, Antoni Gaudí, and Tim Burton, "Bridges" is designed to feel light, upward-striving, and organic in its execution. It is envisioned as a teeming iron sculpture with numerous intricate details, built and forged from salvaged machine parts from local industry.

A solid plate of brushed stainless steel will be placed beneath the base of the linseed oil-burned sculpture, allowing both the sky and the artwork to be softly reflected in its surface.

Bridges will reach a height of approximately five meters and is intended for placement in the center of the existing roundabout. At night, the sculpture will be illuminated by hidden lights, serving as a light source, a navigational aid, and a continuously captivating feature of the streetscape.

Environmental Considerations

The choice of durable materials and a lightweight construction ensures that the sculpture will be highly resistant to external impact and weathering over a long period.

Community Engagement

To ensure that the residents of Oskarshamn feel that Bridges belongs to them—because it does—the sculpture will, as far as possible, be constructed from materials with local roots. Bridges is primarily a sculpture for the people of Oskarshamn, and this should be visible and felt in every aspect of its design.
