"18"
Permanent Public Commission for Folkparken, Norrköping | 2013
Stainless steel, black steel and lighting
The sculpture "18" is a unique fusion of artistic design and international elite sports. Originally built for the World Disc Golf Championships, the piece serves as an official competition basket.
The project was a collaboration between Olav Lunde and Henrik Lunde-Björk.
A primary challenge in the creative process was balancing the artistic form with the rigorous technical standards required for a World Championship-level basket. Standing 2.3 meters tall, including the flag, the sculpture acts as a powerful visual landmark within the park landscape.
The piece is composed of discarded machine parts, vehicle components, and old tools. Lunde finds a specific beauty in these industrial shapes; by repurposing them, he grants these objects a new life on an international stage. While Olav leaves the interpretation of the sculpture’s form to the viewer, its function remains clear: a durable and identity-defining element of the urban space that invites both high-level competition and casual play.
